Akio Asakura is the main protagonist in the Wangan Midnight series.

Biography[]

"" Now I understand another part of you, Devil Z. ""
―Akio Asakura, When the player reaches finish on first place during Rival Chapter of Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune 3.

Akio is the main character of the Wangan Midnight series. Akio has been racing since he was very young. The story of Wangan Midnight begins with him in his last year of high school, something that often takes a back seat to his enjoyment of racing. The driver of the feared 600 HP Devil Z, he is a legend behind the wheel, and the fastest driver on the Wangan alongside Tatsuya Shima and his Blackbird.

Cars[]

In the past, Akio had driven his red Nissan Fairlady Z 300ZX ( Z31 ) until one day when he lost a race to Tatsuya Shima and discovered the Devil Z, a Nissan Fairlady S30Z with a haunting past.

In the live action movie, Akio drove his red Nissan Fairlady Z 300ZX ( Z32 ) instead of the Z31, until he came upon the S30Z.

Personality[]

Akio is a gentle and humble young man, but very serious about racing. Racing is such a priority to him that he once skipped school enough to make him have to repeat a grade just to race, despite having good grades. He also worked as a waiter to get money just to repair his Z.

Reina Akikawa, a model who drives an R32 GT-R, befriends Akio and later has feelings for him, although it is shown that he is only interested in cars and racing, as Reina subtly declares her feelings to him several times during the course of the manga.

However, when Reina leaves for the United States for a year due to her work, she directly declares her love for him, and it is implied that he finally realizes her previous moves and he accepts her, telling her that he will wait her return.
